I've owned and used both the black steel model (5030) and this stainless one (5029). There are 2 things missing on the stainless model that my black 5030 had: 1) There are no dampers in the lid to help regulate smoke/heat and 2) The body does not rotate a few degrees and come up-off the base. You have to reach down in this model to clean the pan around the element and empty ashes. I miss both of these features.



Tips:

--Soak wood chunks overnight, at a minimum. As soon as you open the lid to take food out or open the door to check your wood, it's pretty easy to start a fire in the bottom. Wood that is soaked to the center really helps.

--The first time you use it, turn the dial to low and let it heat up. You may be temped to crank it up, but the element will stay on without occasionally turning off -- good way to start a fire.

--Unplug before spraying hose in bottom to put out fire. You'll end up wandering around the house trying to find which GFI circuit your patio outlet was piggy-backing on.



Cons;

--The thermometer is a "Low/Ideal/High" type - completely worthless. I drilled a hole in my 5030 for a large dial thermometer, but no such luck with stainless. You'll definitely want to keep a thermometer inside, either wireless or wire pinched under the lid, if you care about temps like I do.

--The bottom rack is very awkward to get in and out, especially with anything on it. The top rack supports get in the way.

--The body does not detach from the base making it difficult to clean out the ashes. I recommend letting it cool and using the shop-vac.

--The 2 racks won't fit nearly as much meat as you may think. A cabinet style smoker is for you if you want to cook for more than a small get-together.



Overall I'm actually pretty happy with this smoker. Sure, it's not a giant competition rig, but for 200 bucks it's hard to beat. This is my go-to backyard smoker.

This is a replacement for another (not stainless) smoker. It is as advertised, quite easy to assemble, however, the cover should fit more snuggly as to retain more of the heat. Other than that - a fine unit.

The smoker was delivered as promised. It took around an hour to assemble it while I was having my morning coffee. If you are in a hurry, just buy your meats from the market already smoked.



So far I have smoked beef tri-tip with apple wood, and king salmon with cherry wood. Both turned out fantastic.



Beef takes a few hours and the fish takes around one hour; of course it depends on size and temperature, etc. It is nice that I only need to add wood chips and turn the electric thermostat on without the need for charcoal.

This pulls some serious electricity -- it runs off a 1000-plus-watt element -- and in my house, it causes breakers to switch off. I eventually converted this to a charcoal smoker (Meco sells a kit to do this). This really shouldn't be a problem in newer houses.



At this price, though, I'd have to look hard at a Weber Smoky Mountain cooker. It's not stainless but it is enameled steel and it comes with a cover -- it should last for years and years, if not decades and decades. It also has superior heat control (this Meco unit, like many water smokers, has no controllable vents). I've made some very good BBQ with this Meco but it does require a lot more attention than my Smoky Mountain. I use this at big BBQs when I often will fire up this, plus a Weber, plus a big barrel grill.

I was unable to keep a constant temp because there is no damper on the lid. I had to use a stick to keep the lid open slightly. Took forever to cook ribs and chicken and they came out slightly dry because of no convection without the damper. Barrel section was dented also. Very cheap design, I would not recommend this item when there is so many better ones for a quarter of the price.

I've used this as a grill and a smoker so far. It's okay as a grill. It works great as a charcoal smoker. I did a rack of spare ribs and they turned out tender with great flavor. Best ribs I've ever made. The only complaint is in how it arrived. The smoker body came out of the box slightly flattened on the sides even though there was no visible damage on the box. I used a rubber mallet to tap the body back into a circular shape before assembly, and everything fit together after that. If Amazon or Meco beefed up the box for shipping I would have no complaints. Otherwise, the smoker itself is a great value.

After several hours of searching and reading reviews of many different budget smokers I bought the Meco 5031. Easy enough to assemble. Kinda cheaply made, but it is a budget unit. I did check out the competition (under a $100) at the Big Box stores and they were cheaply made also. You get what you pay for! I have used this smoker once and it did a fairly good job. The Pulled Pork tasted great,was tender and moist. I did find it difficult to regulate the heat with the vents in the lid of the unit. Could best control in side heat by adding small chunks of lump coal at a time and leaving the top vents wide open. Hopefully with more practice I'll get this part down better. So, if your on a very tight budget this will get the job done with a little bit of babysitting. If your budget will allow, and you like quality built items,maybe spend the $200 to $300 for a better unit.

Bought this smoker for my son for Christmas. First of all, it arrived about a week before I expected it, which was great. My son has already used it 3 times since Christmas and is just delighted with the results. He says it cooks faster than he expected, but the flavor and juiciness of the meat is terrific. If I had been able to see one of these smokers in the store I would not have bought it. It seems poorly made and doesn't fit together very well. But since I bought it and went to the trouble of putting it together, we gave it a try. It works! We've used it every weekend since we got it - ham, chicken, sausage - everything is great. Smoking meat is about finding a way to cook in smoke all day at about 200 degrees. You either tediously tend a fire or find an automatic smoker like the Bradley models. Bradley has been around for a long time and their smokers work great.



The "perfect" weekend smoker for home would be one of their digital smokers like Bradley Digital 4- Rack Smoker. It is reasonably compact and well made. It uses 120 volt electricity to turn the wood bisquettes into smoke.



But, it is hard to take your smoker with you. For camping weekends, the Propane Smoker is "perfect". Instead of using 120 volt electricity it uses a 1 pound can of propane and 4 AA batteries. The system of a rack and foil tent is very clever. The finished food is wonderful. You will make lots of friends because the all day aroma will bring visitors!



Pros:

- stores in a compact bag

- well made components

- it iseasy to control the cooking temperature

- you can throw away the tent so it does not stink on the way home

- all the dirty parts can be transported home in a garbage bag for cleaning in the dishwasher.

- it is a lot of fun to use on a camping trip



Cons:

- a challenge to use if it is windy

- you have to buy tents

- you have to buy propane cans

- you have to buy Bradley bisquettes like Bradley Smoker Bisquettes, 48 Pack (Choose Flavor)

- if you store it in an RV, you have to keep it clean or it smells



Hints:

- focus on cheap ribs, brisket and pork shoulder

- dry rub the meat at home before the camping trip and double bag it in plastic

- poke a cooking thermometer throgh the tent for temperature control

- if you want to clean the parts "in the field" soak them overnight in a Rubbermaid tube with a strong dose of ammonia cleaner.



If you like to cook meat when you go camping this is a toy you will have a lot of fun with. Your friends and family will love you for it.

The main advantage of this smoker is it's small size, which is just right for the two of us. It comes apart and all the smoker enclosure racks etc go in the dishwasher, so clean-up is very easy. It is designed to be transported in a hold-all, though we haven't done that - we just carry it from and to the garden shed for storage. The smoker "bag" that is the cover for the enclosure definitely has a finite life, and it would have been good if they included a few more than the one extra in the box. The only problem I have encountered is that here in Texas, where the outside air is usually pretty warm, it is hard to get the internal smoker temperature down low enough for a long cooking time. Even on the lowest setting the cooking flame heats the smoker to 250 to 300 degrees. The smoker flame isn't enough on its own, so you end up turning the oven flame on and off for those really low temperature foods like fish. I let it get up to its full (minimum) temperature and then turn it off and just let it smoke for the rest of the time. Seems to work very well. It is a nice smoker for those of us that are just occasional fans of smoked foods.

Took me wayyy longer than it should to cook one slab of ribs, since I kept having to take them out, take the grill out, take the water pan out (which resulted in disaster on my first try), and re-light charcoal. Do not buy a smoker without a door on the side for adding more coals or wood. I could not keep the temp up at all. I used the minion method to get coals lit, and I'm pretty sure I did it all properly. I got so frustrated by the end that I just finished cooking my ribs in the oven. I've never had buyer's remorse so bad before.

I purchased a Smoke Hollow propane gas smoker from the high recommendation of a good friend who has one and uses his extensively. It arrived on time and after some painless basic assembly, I seasoned the unit using the directions included with the smoker. I was excited to christen the smoker with an offering consisting of one whole chicken, and a large pork butt (shoulder). I was NOT disappointed. The unit lights up instantly and trouble free. Temperature is easily maintained at the desired 200-220 degree mark. The entire smoker is well built and the water pan and wood fire box are constructed for many years of faithful service. With four meat racks, a BBQ aficionado can smoke just about anything you could imagine. I have since successfully smoked whole turkeys, hams (to add a smoky flavor), scallops, shrimp, fish, bratwurst, ribs, chicken, and of course my personal favorite, pork shoulder roast to produce THE BEST pulled pork sandwich. I have not yet tried it but I feel confident I could even cold smoke a slab of bacon, ham hocks or cheese in the unit if the door were to be left ajar a little with a flame low enough to just ignite the wood box, especially if you tried it in the winter when it's nice and cold out so the heat wouldn't build up in the box. This smoker is basically bullet-proof and it turns out savory slow cooked, melt in your mouth BBQ every time. It is also an economical propane user as I can smoke quite a few all day loads without necessitating a propane refill (5gal bottle). I've tried many other units; electric, charcoal, etc. THIS is the easiest, most successful and trouble free unit I've tried. I highly recommend this smoker!

We are going to buy a second one for our sons. I've cooked pork ribs, roasts, steak, fish, chicken and just did asparagus with fresh tomatoes. I've experimented with Apple, Mesquite and Hickory. All turned out good. The only problem I had was cooking a lot of pork ribs at once some of the grease ran out the front and onto the patio. With absolutely no other seasoning this thing makes you into a great outdoor chef.
